In 33 days from today, we will be sailing into Trondheim in the morning where we expect the temperature could reach about 5ºC. The Capella will dock for three hours, which might be an opportunity for an on-land self-guided adventure! The third largest city in Norway, Trondheim was founded in 997 as a trading post. It went through many name changes as the language evolved, from Nidaros (old Norse, meaning mouth of the river Nid), kaupangr í Þróndheimi (less-old Norse, the city in Trondheim), then Þróndheimr for short. Over time this became Trondhejm, which used the Dano-Norweigan spelling, since the city was part of the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway for centuries. In 1917, a royal resolution was enacted to Norwegianise the language, and in finally 1931, Trondheim’s current spelling was decided.

Trondheim is home to the Nidaros Cathedral, which is considered one of the most important gothic monuments in Norway. Building commenced in 1070 and was completed around 1300.

Back on the Capella, we’ll be later pulling into Kristiansund, which is where we will do our next formal excursion - the Atlantic Road and Bergtatt Marble Mine.

The Atlantic Road is considered one of the most beautiful drives in the world.
