Rovaniemi: Pedals, Pizza & Polar Lights

The day started a little early—1:30am to be exact. What began as a simple bathroom break turned into a northern lights chase! I glanced out the window and there it was: a shimmering green aurora dancing in the sky. I woke Cloe up, and we quickly bundled ourselves into big coats and beanies before heading out in search of darker skies to catch a better view and hopefully snap some photos. It was so much better than the aurora we saw on the boat a few weeks ago. Rovaniemi really lives up to its reputation as one of the best spots to witness this magical phenomenon.

After a slow start and a light breakfast at our Airbnb, we went straight back to Robert’s Coffee. When you’ve found a good thing, why change it? One oat cappuccino for Jase, one americano for me—simple perfection.

Arktikum Science Museum

Next stop: the Arktikum Museum, an architectural gem and a true highlight of Rovaniemi. This place offers a deep dive into Arctic life, with interactive exhibits covering everything from Arctic wildlife and climate change to the northern lights and Sámi culture. The building itself, with its striking glass corridor that points true north, is an impressive structure. We wandered through displays that balanced science, history, and stunning natural visuals—it’s definitely a must-visit if you’re ever up this far north.

Lunch was a casual but satisfying sushi buffet in the centre of town, fueling us up for what turned out to be the most unexpectedly epic part of the day: fat biking in the snow.

Fat biking on snow

Fat e-bikes, to be precise. I think I’ve found my new favourite sport. Snow, speed, stunning scenery—it’s all the best things rolled into one. I’ll let the photos do most of the talking here, but without doubt, this was the best thing we’ve done the entire trip. Total joy on two wheels.

Back at the Airbnb, we made full use of our in-bathroom sauna (every home should have one of these, honestly). After warming up and winding down, we headed out for dinner at Massimo Pizza, a spot recommended by our Airbnb host (who also works there!). Think wood-fired pizza, generous toppings, and creamy gelato to finish. It was the ideal ending to a full and fun day.

Rovaniemi, you’ve really outdone yourself.
